The Chandigarh Police has registered an FIR against a constable and a woman for allegedly extorting Rs 3 lakh from a 79-year-old NRI by planting drugs in his car.

The case was registered on the complaint of US-based Jaspal Singh Cheema. The complainant told police that he has a house in Sector 68, Mohali, and on July 18, he along with his friend Harinder, went to Sector 22 for shopping.

Cheema and his friend returned after sometime, in the meanwhile, two persons including a constable named Balwinder Singh, who was posted at Sector 17 police station, and one private person arrived there. The constable wanted to search Cheema’s car. Cheema opened the door following which Balwinder started searching the car while the person accompanying him started recording on a mobile phone.

Cheema in his complaint alleged that the constable pulled out one black polythene claiming that it was drugs, and then started negotiating with him in order to bail him out. In the meantime, Harinder called her friend for help and in no time her friend and her brother-in-law Karan arrived at the spot. Karan persuaded the policeman to not register a case. The constable then called someone and told Cheema that he will have to pay Rs 7 lakh, alleged Cheema in the FIR. After the negotiations, Balwinder agreed to settle the matter at Rs 3 lakh.

Cheema told the police that while letting them go the constable took his car’s registration certificate and his senior citizen card of the US. The police personnel asked Karan to visit the complainant’s house and get his passport as guarantee to ensure that Cheema pays the remaining amount.

Festive offer

Despite paying the agreed amount, Cheema’s passport was not returned by the constable and he was told that the constable was pressurising Karan to arrange more money. The complainant then got suspicious and realised that the constable, along with Harinder, extorted money from Cheema . The complainant, who had already missed his flight back to the US, decided to approach the police.

Police investigated the matter and registered an extortion case at Sector 17 police station. Constable Balwinder and Harinder have been arrested.
