Delhi-NCR was thrown into chaos on Wednesday evening as torrential rains lashed the region, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic gridlock. The downpour, which caught residents off guard after a largely dry day, led to significant disruptions in daily life.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The unexpected intensity of the rain overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure, resulting in flooded streets, collapsed structures, and traffic snarls that brought the metropolis to a standstill. Many residents also got rained on as they were stuck in the open while the spell lasted for an entire hour non-stop.

Unexpected downpours can quickly turn a pleasant day into a challenging ordeal. While brief exposure to rain is generally harmless, extended periods in wet conditions can pose significant health risks.

Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi, warns against prolonged rain exposure. The body’s ability to regulate temperature is compromised when wet clothing saps away heat, increasing the risk of hypothermia. This condition, characterised by abnormally low body temperature, can lead to shivering, confusion, and in severe cases, even loss of consciousness, he explained.

According to senior officers, adequate traffic inspectors and circle officers were deployed to address each issue depending on the severity of the incident. Beyond hypothermia, prolonged exposure to moisture can weaken the skin’s protective barrier, making it susceptible to infections. Skin maceration, a condition caused by excessive moisture, can create a conducive environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive, according to Dr Chatterjee.

What to do if you’ve been stuck in the rain for a long time

To mitigate these risks, seeking shelter from the rain as soon as possible is paramount. Once indoors, it’s essential to remove wet clothing immediately and dry the body thoroughly. Warm beverages can help restore core temperature, but avoid alcohol as it can exacerbate heat loss.

If symptoms of hypothermia, such as shivering, confusion, or slurred speech, develop, Dr Chatterjee advised it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Similarly, any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or pus, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

By understanding the potential dangers and taking appropriate precautions, individuals can significantly reduce the risks associated with prolonged rain exposure.
