A day after a senior citizen couple sustained minor injuries in an attempted chain snatching incident in outer Delhi’s Mianwali Nagar on Thursday evening, the Delhi Police managed to arrest both the accused on Friday night.

According to police, the incident took place when retired doctor Dr Anil Bansal, 67, and his wife, writer Santosh Bansal, 62, resident of Paschim Vihar West area, were out for a walk. “Parkinsons patient Dr Bansal said that while he was walking in the colony, a motorcycle came from behind and tried to snatch his wife’s chain. His wife lost her balance and she fell on the road. He tried to chase the accused, but he fell and got injured,” said a senior police officer.
In the CCTV clip of the incident, the police found that one of the accused was coming on a motorcycle and was trying to snatch the chain of the woman before fleeing.
Police said they received a PCR call regarding the incident. “It was an attempt and the chain could not be snatched. The woman suffered minor scratches on her neck and her husband sustained injuries,” said Sameer Sharma, DCP (Outer District).
He said, ‘Sometime back, a similar incident of phone snatching had come to light in Paschim Vihar East, in which a black colored motorcycle was used. A team scanned 25 cameras and checked the vehicle’s registration number and later, it matched the number of the bike used here in Mianwali Nagar. A raid was conducted and accused Sachin was apprehended and co-accused Chiranjeev was also arrested at his behest.
During interrogation, it was revealed that Sachin had tried to snatch the chain and the co-accused was waiting outside the colony. “Similar modalities were used in the Paschim Vihar East snatching incident in which Chiranjeev snatched a blue colored bag from a woman. Sachin said that he works as a delivery boy for an e-commerce firm and had dropped out of school. He said that he committed the crime to support his alcohol addiction, due to which he was always short of money. Chiranjeev said that he studied till class VII and later became addicted to drugs and alcohol. He claimed that he was sleeping on footpaths and parks and said that he had committed petty crimes for money,” said Sharma.
