Tension gripped several areas of Gandacherra sub-division in Tripura’s Dhalai district, 112 km from Agartala, on Friday evening, following the death of a tribal youth, officials said on Saturday. A large police contingent was deployed to bring the situation under control.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, a senior Tripura police official said that the youngster Parameshwar Das was from the indigenous Reang community and was injured in the aftermath of a clash that originated at a local fair called ‘Anondo Mela’ at Gandacherra five days ago.

“He passed away while he was under treatment at GBP Hospital in Agartala on Friday. After his body reached his residence in Dhalai district, there was some tension in some pockets of Gandacherra,” the official added.

Das’s body was taken to Gandacherra Friday evening amidst tension between different communities. The Dhalai district superintendent of police also visited the area late Friday night.

Sources said some locals engaged in brick pelting at the police when the latter tried to reach out to them and contain the situation.

Festive offer

Meanwhile, Tripura’s ruling alliance partner TIPRA Motha party founder and royal scion-turned-politician Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Saturday appealed for peace and said the government would take strict action on his death. “I condemn the murder of Parmeshwar Reang in Gandatwisa. I have personally spoken to the highest police authority and demanded that the culprits be charged under relevant IPC. Also appeal for peace and restraint, will personally go and meet the family. We demand justice!” Pradyot said in a post on X.

In an audio message late Friday evening, he once again appealed to people in Gandatwisa to remain calm. “I have spoken with DGP and he has assured he will take strictest action against whoever killed Parameshwar Reang. Such action will be taken that people will think twice before hurting anyone,” he said.

Pradyot also said he would visit Gandatwisa soon, meet the affected family, help them, and ensure justice.
