The PMC was pressed into service to assist residents to help them resume normalcy. Shops on the ground floors of buildings and the goods they stocked were completely damaged. Similarly, the flood water that entered houses caused much damage. The garbage vans pressed into service made at least 100 trips in Ektanagari to dispose of damaged property.

The civic administration also helped clean up properties with jetting machines and provided drinking water through tankers and a mobile medical clinic for affected residents.

“Many administrative officers and elected representatives are visiting the locality to take stock of the issue and compensate for the loss. We want a permanent solution to the issue of flooding which has been playing havoc in the area for 20 years now,” said Sulekha Shinde, resident of the area.

Mayank Joshi said residents were caught unaware and woke up in the morning to find water had flooded their houses. “There was no option but to run to safety, so those who lived on the lower floors sought refuge in the upper floors. If they had informed us that large quantities of water had been released in the river, the damage to our property could have been reduced,” he said.

People who were rescued had to stay over at their relatives, and some stayed in civic facilities, but returned in the morning to take stock of their homes, he said.

The owner of a store selling food items said all his goods and furniture were destroyed and had to be thrown away. “I have nothing left in the shop, and I dont know how I will restart the store as it needs investment,” he said.
