The Bengaluru police on Wednesday announced the arrest of a 30-year-old man who allegedly turned to stealing two-wheelers to support his friend’s wife undergoing breast cancer treatment.

The police said the accused, Ashok, was living at his friend’s house after he had been separated from his wife. The Girinagar police in Bengaluru also arrested his accomplice, Satish alias Sathya, 34, and recovered eight bikes worth Rs 10.71 lakh.

The police said when Ashok learned that his friend’s wife was suffering from cancer and couldn’t afford treatment, he initially tried to borrow money from many people but couldn’t secure enough for the treatment.

A police officer said, “Eventually, he teamed up with Satish and began stealing bikes parked outside houses. A software engineer filed a bike theft complaint at Girinagar police station. After reviewing the CCTV footage, we discovered Ashok’s involvement and subsequently arrested him.”

The police said the accused used to break the locks of the bikes and sell them in rural areas for less than their original value.
