A speeding car left an elderly ragpicker dead after hitting the woman and then dragging her for more than two kilometres on the outskirts of Rajkot, Gujarat, late on Thursday night.

The victim, Vijaya Bathwar, and her son Dinesh were returning home in Kankot village after picking up rags, at around 11.30 pm, when the incident took place, the police said.

According to an FIR registered at Rajkot Taluka police station, a white car coming from the opposite direction hit Vijaya, a Dalit woman in her sixties, which left her stuck below the car. Dinesh ran behind the car, crying for help but the car sped away towards Kalavad Road.

“As per the complaint given by the victim’s son, the car dragged the woman for more than two kilometres and the victim dropped dead near a tea stall on Kalavad Road,” D M Haripara, police inspector of Rajkot Taluka police station told The Indian Express on Friday. Having followed the car, Dinesh reached the tea stall where he identified his mother’s body, Haripara said.

“We are collecting technical evidence like CCTV footage of the area and trying to identify the vehicle involved in the incident. However, there is no breakthrough as yet,” the police inspector said.

Based on another complaint filed by Vijaya’s elder son Jagdish (42), a case under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (rash or negligent act causing death not amounting to murder) has been registered.
