Uttarakhand’s State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has rescued a kanwariya from drowning in the Ganga in Haridwar. A video of an SDRF jawan rushing to the young man’s rescue is now doing rounds on the internet.

The viral video shows a kanwariya drowning amid strong currents and SDRF officials swam through the Ganga to rescue him. The video then shows pictures of the kanwariya coming out of the river.

“While taking a bath at Kangra Ghat in Haridwar, a Shiv bhakt from Delhi drowned in the strong current of Ganga. #UttarakhandPolice SDRF jawan H C Ashiq Ali then jumped into the Ganga and pulled the young man out safely and saved his life,” Uttarakhand Police wrote in Hindi on X.

Reacting to the video, an X user wrote, “Respect for Jawan.” Another user commented, “Good work SDRF team, salute Ashiq Ali.”

“This is India and the culture of India, here Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians live like brothers and you cannot lie about it. Now see, a Muslim brother is saving these Kavadis by risking his life. It is shameful for those who spread hatred,” a third user wrote.

In 2019, a kanwariya was killed in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district allegedly after she fell off a tractor-trolley while dancing to songs playing in the vehicle. According to reports, the incident happened on the Haridwar-Delhi national highway near Chapar village.
