Three persons were arrested on Wednesday night for allegedly stealing antique items from farmhouses and weekend homes at Dumas in Surat.
The police identified the three men as Shaukat alias Shanker Rathod (43) and Sunil Rathod (21) from Althan and Tejas Rathod (30) from Umra village. Antique items likes vessels and idols made of copper as well as jewellery were recovered from them, the police added.
Dumas police Inspector N V Bharwad said, “Our teams were patrolling the silent zone area near Surat International Airport, when Shaukat and Sunil were spotted carrying suspicious in their bags. They were stopped and when searched, two copper idols were recovered.”
“They were arrested and during questioning, they mentioned other items they had stolen, which were later recovered. The name of Sunil Rathod also came up during their questioning and he was arrested. The market value of the antique items seems to be over a lakh of rupees and we have called an expert for valuation,” he added.
Bharwad further said that the three men, on July 22 night, had trespassed into two bungalows and stolen antiques. “We have called the bungalow owners to get more details,” he added.
