Shocked by the loss of its Black Sea flagship and angered by Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory, Russia’s military command a day earlier warned of new attacks on the Ukrainian capital, saying it was targeting military sites.

Associated Press reporters this week documented civilian deaths in attacks on the eastern city of Kharkiv, and each day brings new discoveries of civilian victims in a war that has shattered European security. In the Kyiv region alone, Ukrainian authorities are reported to have found the bodies of more than 900 civilians, most of whom have been shot dead, after Russian troops retreated two weeks ago.

Smoke rose from East Kyiv early Saturday when Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a strike in the city’s Darnitsky district. He said rescue teams and paramedics are at the scene and details of possible deaths will be given later. The mayor advised residents who had fled the city earlier in the war and did not return for their own safety.

It was not immediately clear from the ground what was killed in the attack. Darnytskyi is a sprawling district on the capital’s southeastern edge, with a mix of Soviet-style apartment blocks, new shipping centers and big-box retail outlets, industrial areas and railyards.

A spokesman for Russia’s Defense Ministry said Russian forces used “high-precision long-range weapons from the air” to target an armored vehicle plant in Kyiv. He did not specify where exactly the plant is located in Kyiv, but there is one in Darnitsky District.

This is the second attack in the Kyiv area in two days. Another struck a missile plant on Friday as possible signs of former life re-emerge in the capital after Russian troops failed to capture the city and focused on launching a full-scale offensive in eastern Ukraine.

Kyiv was not the only target on Saturday. An explosion is believed to have been caused by a missile in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, in eastern Ukraine, according to firefighters and AP journalists at the scene.

One person was killed and at least 18 injured in the strike near an outdoor market with residential and industrial buildings because they were not authorized to release information, according to rescue workers who requested anonymity.

Meanwhile, the governor of the Lviv region in western Ukraine, an area far from the Russian border and long seen as a safe zone, reported airstrikes on the area by Russian Su-35 aircraft, flying from neighboring Belarus. Fighting continued in the southern port city of Mariupol, where locals reported seeing Russian soldiers digging up bodies. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russian troops of occupying parts of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions in the south and hunting for anyone who served in Ukraine’s military or government.

“The occupiers feel that this will make it easier for them to control the area. But they are very wrong. They are making a fool of themselves,” Zelensky said in his video address of the night.

“Russia’s problem is that it is not accepted, and will never be accepted by the entire Ukrainian people. Russia has lost Ukraine forever.”

Officials think 2,500 to 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the war, Zelensky told CNN in an interview. He said around 10,000 were injured and it was difficult to say how many would survive.

The UN human rights office said it had confirmed 1,982 civilian casualties, but cautioned that the figure did not include those killed in blockade cities such as Mariupol and that the actual number was almost certainly much higher.

Russia’s warning to intensify attacks on the capital comes after Russian officials accused Ukraine of injuring seven people and damaging nearly 100 residential buildings with airstrikes in Bryansk, a region bordering Ukraine. Officials in another Russian border area also reported Ukrainian shelling.

Ukrainian officials have not confirmed the target of the attack in Russia, and the reports could not be independently verified.

However, in a significant victory for Ukraine and a symbolic defeat for Russia, Ukrainian officials earlier this week attacked a major Russian warship with missiles.

A senior US defense official said the US believed Moscow was hit by at least one Neptune anti-ship missile. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an intelligence assessment.

Moskva, named after the Russian capital, sank on Thursday after heavy damage while being taken to port. Moscow did not admit any attack, saying only that the fire had detonated the ammunition on board.

The sinking reduces Russia’s firepower in the Black Sea and appears to symbolize Moscow’s fate in an eight-week offensive, widely considered a historical mistake after the Russian withdrawal from the Kyiv region and much of northern Ukraine. as seen.

In Mariupol, the city council said Friday that locals reported Russian soldiers digging up bodies buried in residential courtyards and not allowing “new burials of those killed by them”.

“Why the search is being conducted and where the bodies will be taken is unknown,” the council said on the Telegram messaging app.

Also on Friday, a Ukrainian regional official said seven people were killed and 27 were injured when Russian forces opened fire on buses carrying civilians in the village of Borovaya near Kharkiv. The claim could not be independently verified.
