Demanding its immediate rollback, the Delhi BJP on Friday staged a protest against the AAP Delhi government over increased Power Purchase Adjustment Cost (PPAC) fees on electricity. The AAP responded by accusing the BJP of misleading the people of Delhi by “spreading rumors” that electricity prices had been increased through the PPAC.
Demonstrators, including Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, breached police barricades near the Delhi Secretariat and were placed under preventive custody before being let off later.
“From August 2014 to September 2015, PPAC was not applied to electricity bills in Delhi, but the Kejriwal government re-imposed it… Power discoms repeatedly demanded an increase in electricity rates. For political gain, Kejriwal never allowed the per-unit rate of electricity to increase but increased PPAC which was merely 1.7% in 2015 to 37% today,” he alleged. ENS
The AAP, responding to the BJP’s allegations, said electricity was the cheapest in Delhi compared to the entire country due to its “honest governance” and that DISCOMs had a provision in the Electricity Act, 2003 allowing them to increase PPAC by up to 10% from that prescribed in case of the high cost of power purchase.
